Red brick and ivy

Kurashiki Ivy Square reuses buildings from a spinning mill founded in 1889. The red-brick walls and sawtooth roofs retain the form of the industrial site.

In the courtyard, look beyond the ivy to the repeated windows and roof profile. They show how former factory buildings have been adapted for present use.

Architect Shizutaro Urabe designed the redevelopment while retaining the factory's exterior and basic structure. The early mill buildings were recognised as Modern Industrial Heritage in 2007.
